چکیده

In this paper we demonstrate low loss transmission both above and below the primary band-gap for a photonic crystal (PC) super-prism device consisting of 600 lattice periods. By modifying the refractive index of the holes, we reduce overall insertion loss to just 4.5 dB across the entire visible spectrum. We show that the remaining loss is predominantly due to impedance mismatch at the boundaries between patterned and unpatterned slab waveguide regions. Experimental loss measurements compare well with finite difference time domain simulations. q 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Numerical Analysis of Index-Guiding Photonic Crystal Fibers with Low Confinement Loss and Ultra-Flattened Dispersion by FDFD Method

In this article, perfectly matched layer (PML) for the boundary treatment and an efficient compact two dimensional finite-difference frequency-domain (2-D FDFD) method were combined to model photonic crystal fibers (PCF). For photonic crystal fibers, if we assume that the propagation constant along the propagation direction is fixed, three-dimensional hybrid guided modes can be calculated by us...

Calculated out-of-plane transmission loss for photonic-crystal slab waveguides.

A fully three-dimensional finite-difference time domain numerical model is presented for calculating the out-of-plane radiation loss in photonic-crystal slab waveguides. The propagation loss of a single-line defect waveguide in triangular-lattice photonic crystals is calculated for suspended-membrane, oxidized-lower-cladding, and deeply etched structures. The results show that low-loss waveguid...

Demonstration of high waveguide bending efficiency (>90%) in a photonic-crystal slab at 1.5μm wavelengths

Using a two-dimensional (2D) photonic-crystal slab structure, we have demonstrated a strong 2D photonic band gap with the capability of fully controlling light in all three dimensions[1]. Our demonstration confirms the predictions [2] on the possibility of achieving 3D light control using 2D band gaps, with strong index guiding providing control in the third dimension, and raise the prospect of...

Numerical studies of 2D photonic crystals: Waveguides, coupling between waveguides and filters

In photonic crystals, light propagation is forbidden in a certain wavelength range, the bandgap. In a two-dimensional crystal composed of parallel high-refractive index rods in a low-index background a line defect can be formed by removing a row of these rods, which can act as a waveguide for frequencies in the bandgap of the crystal. In order to get more insight into the main features of such ...

Photonic Crystal-Based Polarization Converter for Optical Communication Applications

A photonic crystal-based TE to TM polarization converter for integrated optical communication is proposed in this paper. The photonic crystal consists of air circular-holes in slab waveguide. The radius of holes are determined to be 291nm having lattice constant of 640nm using the gap map and band diagram. The polarization converter is composed of an InGaAsP triangular-shaped waveguide on SiO2 ...
